Here we go again. The threats have begun. If they don't get their way, they will shutdown the government.
For the umpteenth time, I am over it.
First, this is personal for me. I am the spouse of a government employee. My husband is an Air Traffic Controller which means that he is an essential employee. If the government shuts down, he still has to work ... without pay ... until the deal is done and things are running again. He does get paid eventually. It is oh so lovely to receive a paycheck so extremely large from the back pay that it throws you into a tax bracket that you can only dream about.
Second, the reasons for this are appalling.
"We must act to fully defund Planned Parenthood," the letter says. "Please know tha twe cannot and will not support any funding resolution - an appropriations bill, an omnibus package, a continuing resolution, or otherwise - that contains any funding for Planned Parenthood, including mandatory funding streams."
"Cruz said his escalating crusade against Planned Parenthood was inspired by a recent series of undercover videos showing the family planning provider engaged in the donation of fetal tissue for medical research after abortions. He said the videos "show the face of evil," because they feature doctors discussing reimbursement costs for fetal tissue donations at lunch over salad and wine ...
But Republicans have been talking about defunding Planned Parenthood since long before the videos were released. Cruz told pastors their congregations could make an "enormous difference" by calling their members of Congress and holding them to their campaign promises.
"We have a moment where we can stand together and act, and all we need is for our elected leaders to actually do what they said they would do," Cruz said. "They campaigned promising to defend the right to life. Now is the moment where we distinguish word from action."
It is all escalating again because of these heavily edited videos supposedly catching Planned Parenthood selling fetal tissue to research centers for profit. The congress investigation found no evidence of this.
"Over the last month, we have carefully reviewed the facts at hand and the materials provided to us as a result of the majority's inquiry," said Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette (D-Co.) in a statement.
"Despite the incendiary rhetoric, we have looked strictly at the facts. We are continuing to do our due diligence, but we have found these claims to be unsubstantiated," the statement read.
despite the fact that no federal funding can be used by Planned Parenthood to pay for abortions and
despite the fact that Planned Parenthood provides many health services to low income women and provides birth control which would prevent abortions and isn't that a good thing,
the complete defundng of Planned Parenthood is being demanded.
they will shut down the government. again.
Which brings me to my third "oh hell no"
This constant threat of do this or else? Let's be clear. It's bullying. It's abuse. The threat sounds so distant from personal lives but it affects real people. Defunding Planned Parenthood not only affect real people but affects poor women the most.
We receive this threat over and over and over. Even when it doesn't happen, we, the people, absorb the mental and emotional impact. It's abuse. Stop it. Stop playing games with lives. Stop holding the American people hostage. If another country or foreign group held Americans hostage, it would be considered a violent and terrorist act.
Stop the threats. Stop the abuse. Stop the terror.
