december reflections | best book of 2017

Books are a uniquely portable magic.
— stephen king

I save five start ratings for the very best, for the books that I would push into the hands of others, the books that I hold with love to my chest, soaking in their magic. I did not read as much as I wanted to this year. Grief has a way of robbing the concentration it takes to do the things you love and want to do. Of the seventeen books that I read in 2017, four of them received a five star rating. Now with some time passed, I wonder if I would re-read them and still give a five star or if it was just what I needed and wanted in that moment. No matter. Here are the five star winners of 2017, in order of when I read them this year.

I think all the good parts of us are connected on some level. The part that shares the last double chocolate chip cookie or donates to charity or gives a dollar to a street musician or becomes a candy striper or cries at Apple commercials or says I love you or I forgive you. I think that’s God. God is the connection of the very best parts of us

And if, for some awful reason, you forget that money is a game, a make-believe concept that some people invented, you could be led back into the complex layered world of Should. And here, the loss isn’t a financial one. You are the cost. Is it worth it?
— crossroads of should and must

blessed are the weird people

poets, misfits, writers, mystics, heretics, painters & troubadours
for they teach us to see the world through different eyes.

Grow up and be different and don’t let anyone tell you not to be different, because all superheroes are different.
